#10 Melody Time

#10 Melody Time

All of the melodies, all of the time

So we’ve reached the tenth Walt Disney Animated Feature Film: Melody Time, the fifth package film! It has seven segment set to music and they vary greatly in content. This film has American tall tales, classically narrated stories, instrumental pieces, and even the reappearance of some old friends (ok I use the term friends very loosely). The animators were really able to get creative, even while operating on a tight budget. The film wasn’t received well; none of the segments were particularly lauded. It seems as though by this time audiences were growing bored with the package film format, and no songs or characters were standouts from this film. However, the animation did receive quite a bit of praise. Of the four package films I’ve watched up to this point, Melody Time is the most disjointed. While the segments of Fun and Fancy Free didn’t really relate to each other, they still had Jiminy Cricket in-between to connect them in some way. Melody Time just jumps from one to the other. Try to follow along as we jump in:

My thoughts on Melody Time:

  • Okay, here we go, another bunch of random stories stuck together musical
  • Disney took awhile to find it’s groove, huh
  • That’s….actually kind of promising? Like, a good way to think about life
  • Though they still needed Snow right out the gate
  • Okay now this is starting
  • Melody Time just gets right into it, no Jiminy Cricket breaking into a house here
  • This winter fun is pretty
  • Wow she’s making hearts in the ice while nearly falling down, that’s impressive
  • I think Johnny Weir would appreciate that raw talent
  • Oh my gosh he just slushed her in the face
  • I don’t blame him for laughing, this is funny
  • How many layers is she wearing right now my goodness
  • Lady, you need to learn to laugh at yourself
  • I’ve stumbled while ice skating before, just dust yourself off and keep going
  • Why does she have no nose? Is she related to Voldemort?
  • OH GREAT nice going rabbit
  • You’re literally holding the sign that says ‘thin ice’ maybe don’t stick something in the ice
  • Thumper would never
  • Well this escalated quickly
  • Ugh so close he almost had her hand!
  • WHY does there always seem to be a waterfall peril moment?
  • Horses to the rescue
  • The animals always be saving the day in these Disney movies
  • And now the birds and squirrels!
  • The rabbits are once again useless
  • This is why you need to be nice to animals, you never know when they’ll save your life
  • Aww he closed the frame so they could kiss
  • Ooh, this short has a narrator?
  • Ugh i don’t like Flight of the Bumblebee – it’s annoying
  • That looks nothing like a bumblebee, it’s pink!
  • This is reminding me of Fantasia
  • Ooohhh the flower petals turn into piano keys that’s cool
  • Now the piano keys are a snake for some reason
  • Aww why is it terrorizing this poor insenct
  • Wait the insect is green now why’d/how’d he change color????
  • And then it just…ends…I guess he’s okay?
  • What’s next?
  • Johnny Appleseed!
  • I vaguely remember learning about this in elementary school
  • I’ve heard about Paul Bunyan and Davy Crockett, but who tf is John Henry? I don’t know him NOR his hatchett
  • “Told by an old settler who knew Johnny well” uh, you just showed that he died in 1845, over 100 years before this movie came out – the LIES
  • He’s a Pittsburgh lad!
  • Man they depict Pittsburgh with basically just factories
  • He’s so cheerful

Shane Madej on Johnny Appleseed:

  • If you would like to learn more about Johnny Appleseed apart from this Disney tale, check out this episode of Ruining History https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDw88ijgdOo&t=14s
  • He has princess animal powers
  • Aww Johnny wants to join the parade
  • His guardian angel!…he looks like a normal dude
  • he’s “just the way johnny thought he’d be” well there ya go
  • I don’t like apples but I love apple products – cider and pie ….okay i just like apple cider and apple pie
  • “apple pickles” hmm don’t like that now
  • “Stew ’em, fry ’em, boil ’em, bake ’em” Sounds like Sam “boil ’em, mash ’em, stick ’em in a stew!”
  • I appreciate their passion for apples
  • I get the angel’s point of not needing much to fulfill his dream but also…he’s going to need more than The Bible and a pot
  • Pot as hat – couture
  • WHAT is the work though?
  • He’s just going exploring?
  • No shoes? No weapon?
  • So his mission is just planting apple trees? THAT’s what was so important
  • “if johnny saw them he paid no heed” yeah, just ignore the bear about to maul you, that’ll make it go away
  • Oh, sure, he’s dr doolitle now, just because he doesn’t have a weapon?
  • How many children tried to pet a skunk because of this movie?
  • Bet it didn’t end well for them
  • Hoe-down-throw-down!!!
  • Listen to that fiddle! Makes me wanna jig
  • Johnny’s got a beard!
  • It’s funny to see art styles from later films in early ones, in the faces especially
  • People are THIS excited over apples?
  • Wait til they learn about cheese
  • 40 years of walking and planting?? That’s a lot of apple trees
  • This guardian angel is aggressive, he can’t be gentler when telling this man that it’s time for him to die???
  • “that’s just your mortal husk” oh yeah, no biggie, just his dead corpse
  • this went from 0 to macabre real quick
  • that man is dedicated to apples
  • Little Toot is super cute
  • He does NOT behave, he’s less cute
  • what is he doing??!
  • why would he change the boat’s direction?
  • Oh my god that boat crashed into the whole city!!!
  • This child caused lost lives no longer cute AT ALL
  • He’s in chains omg!!!
  • But he’s still a child right? Hes getting arrested??
  • I agree with serious consequences but…wow…boats are harsh
  • Wow his dad got put on trash duty, that (literally) stinks
  • “you’ve disgraced your father’s name” this song is so guilt trippy
  • So…he’s banished?
  • lol what if he floats back?
  • is he just supposed to wander the ocean for all eternity?
  • What if he wreaks havoc somewhere else?
  • *deep chanting* bad boy
  • oh no a storm!
  • How is this little baby boat going to help this massive ship?
  • They can hear his puff miles away and during a storm??
  • Why didn’t the big ship have an SOS call?
  • Here we go again trying to make me think someone is dead, I KNOW this bratty tug boat will be back
  • there he is
  • HOW is baby boat actually PULLING the huge ship??
  • Little Toot you tire and perplex me, bring on the next short
  • “Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians” that’s kind of a lackluster name for a band. Usually it’s something exciting or pays homage to something, but Fred was like “nah, they’re just from Pennsylvania”
  • This segment is inspired by Trees by Joyce Kilmer, cool!
  • As an English major, I always appreciate an ode to a classic writer
  • I love trees, I love to climb trees
  • When I was a freshman in college there was a tree I would always sit and study in, it was kind of my thing
  • These nature visuals are really pretty, more like a painting than a cartoon
  • The rain almost seems to sparkle
  • You can really feel the chaos of the storm with the music and art
  • While this film is a bit disjointed for me, I do appreciate and enjoy how the segments have their own art styles, I think that’s cool
  • They’re going season by season, really depicting how resilient trees are
  • Also how much they effect the animals-trees are homes, protection, a source of food
  • That was nice and peaceful
  • “Blame It On The Samba” okayy samba let’s liven this up
  • NOOO
  • Oh great the 3 Caballeros are back
  • You had your movie!!
  • Donald and Jose had TWO
  • Is this supposed to be Panchito? He has the same coloring but his design is different
  • Whoever the waiter is he has the chaotic energy to fit in with the three cabs
  • Hmm I would NOT want to taste a Donald and Jose drink
  • This lady is just chilling in a glass playing music
  • Okay there are too many real people in the Disney ANIMATED classics
  • This is making me want to dance
  • WHO is covering her eyes? There are just dismembered hands on her face…
  • This waiter bird is now showering? hmmm
  • WHAT
  • the pink bird lit dynamite under this poor woman’s feet he literally just tried to blow everyone up
  • The 3 Caballero segments always are too chaotic for my liking
  • Roy Rogers like THE Roy Rogers?
  • The restaurant guy?
  • JK I know he’s a famous actor!
  • Haha I like the phrase rootinest tootinest
  • “Maybe it’s best to sashay into it kind of gentle like” sashay away baby!
  • The beauty of the southwest truly is amazing, the landscape is like a different planet
  • Ah! human cowboys in cartoon land!
  • This song is so slow can we wrap it up?
  • Oh this child AGAIN?!
  • Went from hanging out with a man alone in his house to hanging out with cowboys, where are her parents?!!
  • At least she claims she’s with an uncle this time
  • The outrage and disbelief at the children not knowing Pecos Bill WOW
  • These cowboys had that song PREPARED, and they can harmonize
  • They remind me of the singing busts in The Haunted Mansion
  • “Widow maker? That’s a funny name” Death of a spouse is funny to you kid?
  • Remember when she was smiling when Mickey was starving to death? I do.
  • Maybe her parents send her away because she scares them
  • “Aw shucks a woman in the story” listen here you little brat women make stories more interesting
  • These cowboys really ARE like the busts, they sing after EVERY thing
  • “i’d rather hear about the coyotes” why don’t you go off and try to find a coyote?
  • That is such a Texas way of drawing Texas
  • Ah yes, my favorite states “wyoming, milwaukee, and long island sound”
  • Is New Jersey even on this map?!!
  • Aww poor baby Bill
  • How do you not realize your baby fell overboard? Was no one watching him?
  • So, Pecos Bill is like American Mowgli? Raised by wolves after being left alone in the wilderness?
  • I get that he’s whole thing is he’s tough but I would love it and laugh so hard if he tried to fight a wolf or snake and just got taken down – and then got back up of course because this is Disney!
  • Aww he saved his horsey
  • He’s so…energetic
  • He brought rain from California?? Where?
  • I guess North
  • “gold im them thar hills” lol
  • He’s done so much, brought gold, fought people, made the actual Gulf of Mexico, dug the Rio Grande busy guy ol’ Bill
  • Methinks Pecos Bill got Gilderoy Lockhart Disease – he’s taking credit for too much
  • Did he cause the dysentery of the Oregon Trail too?
  • Wooow this Native American bit is SUPER racially insensitive
  • Why would you get rid of stars???
  • Of course, love at first sight
  • Is the horse crying because he’s happy for him or sad that Bill’s in love?
  • Is THAT how bustles work?
  • She’s staying on that horse pretty well!
  • I rode a mechanical bull once, it’s tough!
  • Sue’s one tough lady, you go girl!
  • Uh oh, the horse just freaking LAUNCHED her

Widowmaker said YEET

  • How is the bustle making her bounce? I know this is a tall tale but…*sigh* i know, i know, just watch the movie
  • No one can stop her from bouncing?!
  • Her husband isn’t even going to try to grab her?
  • Oh, here he comes
  • no! he missed!
  • NO! the horse messed him up!
  • Okay, I wasn’t going to mention it, but early on Bill kissed the horse and I was like “hmm that’s weird but I’m not well versed in cowboy lore I guess they just really love their horses” but with all this jealousy and trying to kill sue…I think the horse was in love with Bill???
  • It’s late while I’m writing this and I’m tired and this movie is long, I may not be making much sense…but neither does this segment so there! It’s my turn!
  • This is a long, complicated story
  • This is a tragedy, poor Sue
  • And the fact that he just…gave up on his adventuring and went home 😦 poor Bill
  • I want to see the sequel where he finds out his horse betrayed him, the DRAMA!
  • Oh, of course, these cowboys are still singing

So, I think by now you understand my view on these package films. They’re just not my favorite and it’s hard for me to get into the movie when it’s jumping around all the time. That being said, Melody Time had it’s fun moments. Seeing well-known stories that aren’t fairy tales in the Johnny Appleseed and Pecos Bill segments was interesting and something different. The tree segment was pretty and the music was pretty good at times – as much as Donald annoys me, the Samba bit did make me want to dance!

Next week is the last. package. film. Just gotta keep powering through!
