#8 Make Mine Music

#8 Make Mine Music

“Shout out to the other 58 but I’m different” – Make Mine Music, probably

So, Make Mine Music is a tricky minx – it is not available for watching on Disney+ and is actually the only film in the canon left out. Unlike other films that were not on the site at it’s launch in November of 2019, Make Mine Music has no current plans of being added in. It is also not on any other streaming sites, so the whole situation doesn’t have to do with competitive rights or anything like that. Why is it not available on D+? Well…I don’t know, and no one seems to have a true answer. Some speculate it has to do with violence or nudity depicted in the film, though I honestly don’t think that’s the case as other films have had things edited out or disclaimers at the start and have still been added to the platform. The other big theory (which I’m placing my guess in) is that Disney no longer has the rights to distribute certain pieces of music in the film. One of the biggest things I’ve learned while working in the entertainment industry is how detailed and complicated film rights can be. It would also make sense why it isn’t anywhere – the whole film would be breaking copyright law. However, I am a dedicated blogger, and while it took me a while, I have tracked down all the segments of the film in order to make this post. Most are actually on YouTube, though some have been more difficult to find than others. For example, the Peter and the Wolf segment had to be split up into different videos to avoid a copyright alert, and the Whale segment (which is my guess at the copyright issue) actually had to be split up as one video for audio and one video for the animation.

At this point you may be wondering what exactly is included in this mythic and mysterious package film. It includes ten musical-sequences, all with different types of music and stories told. There’s The Martins and the Coys, a play on the story of the Hatfields and McCoys; Blue Bayou, which was originally a sequence meant for Fantasia; All the Cats Join In, which is about teens in the 1940’s; Without You, which features animations of nature to a lamenting ballad; Casey at the Bat, a visual representation of the popular poem; Two Silhouettes, which featured “rotoscoped live-action ballet dancers” inserted into the animation; Peter and the Wolf, another visual representation, this time of the eponymous orchestral fairy tale; After You’ve Gone, a fun piece featuring anthropomorphized instruments; Johnny Fedora and Alice Bluebonnet, a love story about two hats that reminds me of a Pixar short; and the finale, The Whale Who Wanted to Sing at the Met, which is about a whale who wants to sing at the Met.

With World War 2 occurring, the animation department was down to a skeleton crew. Some animators were drafted, others were recruited to work on propaganda films. And so, the next three films that Disney put out were composed of various independent shorts, Make Mine Music being the first. The film was not given a wide theatrical release and since then the segments have been separated and aired on the big screen and on TV as shorts. It was entered into the very first Cannes Film Festival. The movie did very well amongst critics, who praised everything from the music to the animation, applauding the innovated techniques used and the imagination it took to bring the stories to life.

After searching so long to watch this, I’m excited to see what it’s about. I should disclose that at the time of my writing this, it’s been quite a while since I’ve watched a package film – just about a year! – so I’ll try to get back into the time period. Will I find out exactly what “make mine music” means? I hope so!

My thoughts on Make Mine Music

  • Ooh I like this name up in lights style credit sequence

  • The Martins and the Coys I’m guessing this is supposed to be like the Hatfields and the McCoys?
  • These men look exactly like Johnny Appleseed
  • Oh wait, that comes later doesn’t it? I’m not supposed to know about that yet
  • Also I guess Johnny Appleseed looks like them

  • Oh my goodness there is nudity in this Disney movie
  • Make Mine Music is has mass murder and nudity no wonder it’s not on Disney+
  • I’m very amused by this sequence – the music is fun, the pencil drawing as it goes is a fun detail, and the little sister trying to join in is funny
  • They’re fitting a lot of friends in this car

  • Did they have marching bands at baseball games back int he day?
  • “We want Casey!” Respect the batting order people!
  • The other players are doing some funky dances to taunt the pitcher, just stay on your base!

  • Bro I get you are confident you’ll hit the ball but why even waste time like this???
  • He knows that if he hits a homerun he can run around all the bases and be done? And read his zines in the stands?
  • Okay now he’s ready
  • What happened?!!!
  • Why are you showing me birds?
  • I mean I know the story, I know he struck out but why did it leave the game?
  • “There is no joy in Mudville” This town needs a Dairy Queen, ice cream makes everyone happy!
  • Haha serves you right for being cocky Casey

  • Authors Note: Okay I had to do some YouTube digging but I’m pretty sure I found the original Peter and the Wolf Sequence

  • I’m so happy
  • Ooh another jazzy number

  • A fire?? how’d that start
  • clarinet fish?
  • Oh it’s done already, that was fast
  • Now we have…acting hats?
  • Johnny Fedora sounds like something I would call a guy who spends too much time on Reddit

  • Oh great, now he’s getting cut up and put on a horse
  • Alice!!!!!
  • She’s on the other horse!
  • Another great plot twist
  • “just remember true love will come smiling through” isn’t that a great takeaway for us all after the year that was 2020
  • okay so this next segment is the one where I have to watch two different videos at once, so, this will be interesting
  • Witches? lightning? What does that have to do with a whale that can sing?
  • Okay so the whale was spotted singing
  • If this was modern day, that whale would be all over TikTok
  • Poor Willie they think he ate someone
  • Aww he’s so sweet he’s singing to the birds
  • Does this mean Willie is a Disney princess? I think so
  • Figaro!
  • No!! Don’t shoot Willie!!!!
  • I’m worried about murder way too much in this movie
  • I mean do they really think a human could sing that loud from inside a whale?
  • I love that the sailors are just sitting and enjoying Willie’s music
  • Hahaha he can sing in baritone tenor AND bass
  • I get having a large range but how is he saying different words at once???
  • Go sailors! Keep saving Willie!
  • There are not THREE opera singers there
  • Aww Willie just wants to be applauded on stage
  • He has the clown nose wrapped around his whole head lol
  • Is he really getting famous?? Is this a dream?
  • He’s staring in so many things!
  • Ooh now he’s traveling the world
  • He doesn’t even need to pay for transportation, he can just drive himself!
  • NO
  • It was a dream! and the damn guy shot a harpoon
  • If Willie dies I stg
  • What happened??
  • “Now Willie will never sing at the Met” NO!! Why?!!
  • “miracles never really die” but. did. WILLIE?
  • “in Heaven…Willie still sings” OH MY GOD THEY KILLED WILLIE
  • This movie is horrific and dark
  • Poor sweet Willie, I’m glad he’s finally appreciated
  • “Happy Musical Comedy” I think tf NOT

So…that was Make Mine Music. Honestly, some of the sequences were some of my favorites amongst ALL of the package films. I LOVED the Ballerinas, the instruments dancing was fun, I was captivated by Peter and the Wolf. I’m just honestly surprised that they had a shootout that resulted in everyone dying, nudity, AND killed off a main character/hero of one of the stories, and in a pretty violent way. It was really sad! And how would kids react to that??? Even though I’m super bummed out, I am glad I watched it, because now I truly will have the full experience of watching all of these Disney movies. And now, let me go pour one out for my boy Willie.
